MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) -Shelby County Commissioner Mickell Lowery called on MLGW to stop service disconnections to homes receiving SNAP benefits during a press conference Monday morning.
Lowery, who is also running for Shelby County Mayor, addressed what he is fighting for amid the government shutdown that has affected millions of Americans.
In Washington, two federal judges have ordered the Trump Administration to tap into emergency funds to assist those who rely on SNAP benefits.
Lowery said he is working with MLGW and other resources to do everything they can to help Shelby County residents in need.
“But I believe MLGW will be a good corporate partner by being lenient with those who are verified as SNAP recipients as well,” Lowery said.
The commissioner also said he has talked to several other companies and leaders, including landlords, asking them to give leniency to their customers.
MLGW said in a statement Monday they stand with customers facing hardship amid the federal government shutdown stating:
For 87 years, MLGW has stood with its customers through every challenge. Today is no different. As many face financial strain as a result of the federal shutdown which has affected the SNAP and LIHEAP programs, as well as those who have been furloughed, we understand the impact this has on families across our community. —Memphis Light Gas and Water
MLGW continued to say they are offering relief programs to assist customers. A list of available assistance can be found here. MLGW offices will also extend community office hours as needed.
