Meet Mickell Lowery

Commissioner Mickell M. Lowery is a dedicated public servant with a profound commitment to the communities of Shelby County. Elected to the County Commission on August 2, 2018, and re-elected on August 4, 2022, he currently represents District 8, which includes Downtown Memphis, Frayser, South Memphis, North Memphis, and Central Gardens.

Following in the footsteps of his father, former Memphis City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem Myron Lowery, Mickell has deep roots in public service. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business from LeMoyne-Owen College and a Master’s degree in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas.

Professionally, Mickell has dedicated over two decades to FedEx, holding positions in Global Product Marketing, IT Strategy Management, and Global Sales. Currently serving as a Managing Director, he has been honored with the FedEx Five Star Award and the President’s Club Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the company.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Mickell is a passionate community advocate. He serves on the Board of Trustees for LeMoyne-Owen College, is a board member for New Memphis, and sits on the Board of Directors for the Fire Museum of Memphis. His commitment to youth development is evident through his 13 years of coaching youth football across various associations and he has mentored students and developed afterschool programs at schools throughout Shelby County. Additionally, he has played a pivotal role in implementing after-school tutoring programs at several schools through the A+ Learning Academy.

Mickell’s leadership extends to his past roles as President of the Downtown Neighborhood Association, President and Vice President of the National Alumni Association of LeMoyne-Owen College, and Chairman of the Board of the Memphis Housing Authority. In 2014, he was elected to the Democratic State Executive Committee in Senate District 29.

His dedication has earned him accolades such as Memphis Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40 and Ebony Magazine’s Top 30 Under 30. He is also a graduate of Leadership Tennessee, the Leadership Memphis Executive Class, and the New Memphis Fellow/Leadership Development Institute.

Mickell and his wife, Chonisa, are proud parents to three daughters: Channise, Myla, and Milan.
