Every student deserves a path that works for them. As a father, Mickell knows the system doesn’t fit every child. He’s committed to improving educational outcomes by meeting students where they are and giving them the tools to succeed long after graduation.
- Education as Crime Prevention. Mickell sees youth investment as the first line of defense against crime. He’ll partner with and empower community organizations working in schools and neighborhoods to mentor and protect our most vulnerable young people.
- Mental Health Support in Every School. Inspired by his own daughter’s journey, Mickell will advocate for increased funding for school-based mental health services, recognizing that well-being is essential to learning.
- Expand Vocational & Technical Training. College isn’t every student’s path. Mickell wants to bring local organizations and government together to scale up apprenticeship, mentorship, and career-readiness programs—especially in tech, transportation, trades, and health sectors.
- Streamline & Strengthen Internships. He supports integrating the city and county’s youth internship programs into a larger, coordinated system that maximizes access and impact for students aged 16–24.
- Safe & Modern Learning Environments. With over $1 billion in deferred maintenance in Shelby County schools, Mickell will prioritize facilities upgrades and seek corporate partnerships to “adopt-a-school” and support real improvements.
