Public health is public safety. Far too many residents in Shelby County live in medical deserts – areas without easy access to basic care. Mickell Lowery believes that a healthier county is a safer county, and as Mayor, he’ll ensure healthcare is both accessible and proactive.
- Substance Abuse & Opioid Crisis Response. Mickell will support addiction treatment and prevention programs as part of a holistic public health and public safety framework, recognizing the crisis as both a medical and community issue.
- Neighborhood Clinics, Not Emergency Rooms. Mickell will advocate for the strategic placement of walk-in clinics throughout Shelby County, especially in underserved areas, so residents don’t delay care or overburden emergency rooms.
- Target Health Disparities at the Root. Chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and STIs are tied to access, education, and poverty. Mickell will strengthen the county health department’s role in prevention and public awareness campaigns.
- Address Mental Health as a Public Safety Priority. Too many people in our jail system are there because of untreated mental illness. Mental health care must be a priority, not an afterthought.
